BRAINSTORMING ACTIVITY

This activity will help get you started with writing your manifesto.

As you begin this assignment, you will want to start by defining what you think about design. Which design styles appeal to you most? What do you think design should be? What social purpose should design serve? What defines good design for you? What makes you happy about design? What function/role does design serve? What about professional ethics?

In order to help you focus this thinking even further, you will complete a Brainstorming Activity that should serve a jumping off point for your draft of your manifesto. It is hard for everyone to stare at a blank piece of paper and begin writing. Brainstorming is designed to assist by allowing ideas to flow more freely. You do not pass judgment on your ideas in the brainstorming phase. You just put down any ideas that come to mind. When you begin writing your draft, you will decide if these ideas are good or bad.

Popplet

Popplet is a free program that will help you create a mind map of your ideas for your manifesto. A mind map is a visual diagram of ideas, word and sometimes images. It can help you come up with brainstorming and making connections between ideas. (Read more about mind maps here.) The above video can show you how to set up your Popplet. Just brainstorm your ideas for the time being. You will later share your Popplet with your classmates to get additional direction and suggestions. You can sign up for Popplet at: http://popplet.com/.

Pinterest

The other part of the brainstorming activity will be to create a mood board of the design work that inspires you on Pinterest. A mood board conveys the feeling you want to create with your manifesto. (Read more about mood boards here.) The mood board may also be helpful when you start making the final form of your manifesto. Pinterest is a free site that allows you to "pin" images to a board. Again, you can find out more in the above video. As with the Popplet part of the activity, don't analyze the images you are picking. Just choose images that you respond to for any reason. They should be images of art and/or design and not just random images. You can sign up for Pinterest at: https://www.pinterest.com/.

After completing both activities, you will work with assigned classmates to start evaluating your choices and thinking more critically about your decisions.

Submission Guidelines

You should complete the two parts of your Brainstorming Activity by the start of class Week 8. You should email the links to your Popplet and Pinterest board to your instructor at: kkrcmarik@hotmail.com. The subject of your email should be: ART 122 Brainstorming Activity.

You will discuss your Popplet and Pinterest with an assigned classmate(s) during class Week 8. You may choose to listen to your classmate(s) or not, but the goal is to help you focus your ideas.

You can also post both items to the provided space in the class blog to allow more of your classmates to offer feedback if you so choose.

Due: February 29 (Week 8)
